What Is Plagiarism And The Ethics Of It Philosophy Essay Plagiarism comes from the Latin word plagio. It is translated as to steal. It is better to formulate a definition of plagiarism from the verb plagiarize. To plagiarize means to steal or to borrow someones ideas, works or thoughts. In such a way, plagiarism is copying the work of others and turning it as your own. On the one hand, plagiarism is a deliberate action. It is cheating. People assume the intellectual property rights for their realization in our world. It is the easiest way for realization. Therefore plagiarism is an obstacle for society. It doesnt let society develop in science and technology. It is a process of destruction a man as a person. Plagiarism kills intention to be the first and wish of something new. In our childhood we often hear such words: Dont take it! These things are others! And you mustnt take them! Plagiarism is the same thing. We know that it is wrong, but we do it. In my opinion, plagiarism is usual for young people, who went to achieve fame or to be generally recognized very quickly and without any effort. This kind of people is very lazy and doesnt want to work hard. But their aim is to be famous and they achieve these goals. We can meet plagiarism in many spheres, for example, in literature, music, science, art etc. All people know the composition Lambada. The author of this composition was an unknown composer. Lambada has remained unnoticed for a long time. But then two young boys used this idea. They made new arrangement, changed this composition a little and gava a new life for this melody. Lambada has become very popular in many countries. When this composition began to bring in return, a real author proved his case in court. And then he got ten million dollars. He was satisfied with money, because he didnt want to achieve a success and fame. Provided to be, if somebody use more than seven notes from another composition, it will be real plagiarism. It is a good example of copying the work of others. In art we meet plagiarism very often too. Artists draw their pictures and then these works are copied by somebody else. There is a good example of this process in Kiev. The most popular are Gustav Klimts works. He has made his works in one copy with oil painting. But now people, who replicate them, use china, wood, posters etc. And the most interesting thing is authorship of these copies. These people dont forget to write the name Gustav Klimt. In my opinion, it is absurd. Pictures must be in one copy and be kept in museums. But there is one big problem. If pictures arent duplicated, many people cant see them, because they dont have a chance to travel. We can meet plagiarism in journalism too. Many journalists sit at home and only copy articles of other authors. And then they diffuse it with the help of Internet. Who knows what results will develop from this work? But I think that this work is useless. Authors can cope with it themselves, if .they want. But people like to make a profit out of somebodys work. And it is a pity. Another important thing, which I want to discuss, is our education. Plagiarism is found here very often. It becomes a part of our education. And this problem is eternal and nobody can solve it. Students copy essays, term papers, degree woks. And they dont want to develop. They only seek easy ways. And it begins from the school, when we copy tests; ask our parents or friends to help us with our compositions or to paint a picture. We explain our actions in such a way, we cant do it ourselves. But it is deception and our cunning. Of course, we can, but we dont want to try. We dont want to think. Pupils get into the habit of plagiarism. Their parents must explain them what is good and what is bad. Parents are their tutors during our life. And their purpose is to teach them how children must behave, because then it can be worse. And when children grown up and become students, they think, that whole world center around them and all must be at their feet. I know that I behave sometimes in s uch a way. But I try to wrestle with myself and advise it everybody. In my opinion, this habit is awful. And people cant be stead on their legs, if they dont want to improve. We should improve and improve every day. But plagiarism prevents it. We shouldnt rely on somebody; we must achieve a success themselves. But it is very difficult for some people. They are used to plagiarize and cant live without this process. How can we discuss our education, if we copy somebodys work? We dont want to develop our thinking. We dont aspire to be well-educated, independent, purposeful, and self-confident and we dont want to be a person. We must know that our education only depends on ourselves. Laziness and unwillingness are motives of plagiarism. But how we can tell the difference between plagiarism and borrowing? When is borrowing over and plagiarism begins? At first sight these two notions are the same. But this opinion is deceptive. We meet borrowings in literature. New literary work is based on other ideas in literature, which are well-known for us. Problems, actions, themes and sometimes dialogues and inner monologues are very similar in each novel or story. Authors write about issue of the day. There are many problems, which will be vital at any time, in our life. But authors develop a subject in different ways. And of course they have different plots, characters and their own views on this problem. But we should be very careful with borrowings and know a distinction between borrowing and plagiarism. On the other hand, plagiarism possesses positive qualities. With plagiarism many things are passed on from generation to generation. For example, all inventions had appeared many years ago. But then somebody uses this idea and improves it. In such a way we get a new invention. In my conclusion I want to say, that plagiarism has more negative qualities, than positive. And it is a criminal action. We must remember that it is sued at law. But these things stop people very seldom. It is impossible to struggle with plagiarism, because people choose their life themselves. If they want to use somebody for the sake of their purpose, they will do it. One can show the right way to another, but he must choose how he wants to live.

The Rules of Life: Epictetus’ View   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  As rational beings, we can become conscious of the law that guides all things. Virtue consists in conscious agreement with the inevitable order of things. According to Epictetus’ The Enchiridion, one acts with the virtues of Stoicism: human imperfection, prudence, temperance, and courage. We can relate what Epictetus is saying to our own lives. It appears that some comfort comes in knowing that one has no control over the predetermined.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Epictetus represents a myriad of concepts. One concept of which being that one should live with the awareness of human imperfection and finitude. He expresses the sentiment that one is able to relinquish the feelings of disrespect and desire by allowing all that is ill-fated to appear before one’s eyes each day. Epictetus states, â€Å"Let death and exile and everything that is terrible appear before your eyes every day, especially death; and you will never have anything contemptible in your thoughts or crave anything excessively† (XXI). It is important that we are attentive to the fact that there is much unhappiness and despair in this world. If we do not expose ourselves to such matters, these things will consume us.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Epictetus also conveys that prudence is key. It is important to look at all the things that surround one’s dealings. If these things are not rendered, the outcome will cause one to disgracefully discontinue that which he is doing. One must recognize what it is that he is getting into before actually partaking in it. Epictetus states it clearly: For each action, consider what leads up to it and what follows it, and approach it in the light of that. Otherwise you will come to it enthusiastically at first, since you have not borne in mind any of what will happen next, but later when difficulties turn up you will give it up disgracefully†¦You must either work on your ruling principle, or work on externals, practice the art either of what is inside or of what is outside, that is, play the role either of a philosopher or of a non-philosopher. (XXIX) The example of an athlete is adapted to clarify this belief. If one wants to be a star athlete, then it is important for one to train properly and work hard before the event. Supposing that one does not prepare for the event, then the expectation sh... ...meone else nor himself† (V). This is, perhaps, one of Epictetus’ most influential ideas. As this is clearly something that those in today’s society can relate and utilize from day to day. Epictetus shows us many instrumental concepts in The Enchiridion. He believes that there is a law that guides all things and that virtue consists in the imminent order of things. Human imperfection and the idea of limit is a realization that many have yet to come to. In addition, caution is valuable when setting out to achieve a goal. It is important to look at all factors before jumping into something that could end up causing one pain and frustration in the end. One must convey a sense of self-control at all times. Epictetus gives us insight on how to live a frugal life. Finally, men are disturbed not by occurrences, but by the views which they take of these happenings. The man of great intelligence accuses neither himself nor another when something goes poorly in his life. As we have seen, it is easy for one to relate Epictetus’ beliefs to his own life in today’s society. It is an amazing feat for Epictetus to have written The Enchiridion so long ago, and for it to a pply to our current world.

My philosophy of Education Essay

I never thought I will end studying education. In fact, this possibility was not even considered. At first I was more into medicine or graphic design areas but then I discovered a hidden ability, teaching. I dance since I was twelve years old, and I started to teach in my ballet academy in 2006 to 3-5 year-old girls and I enjoyed it very much. I know that is not the same to teach dance compared with school teaching, but the experience I had with children was very pleasant to me because I found a strong connection between my students and me. So that period marked my destiny and I decided that teaching is what I want to do the rest of my life. Therefore, I am preparing myself to become an Early Childhood Bilingual Generalist. Educating children is very meaningful because it directly affects their lives. Education provides a foundation for a child to base the rest of his or her life on. For this matter, it is very important for every teacher to have their own foundation well defined. There are five types of philosophies of education: Essentialism, perennialism, progressivism, social reconstructionism, and extentialism. As a future educator, I will follow the progressivism student centered philosophy.   I believe on focusing on the individual needs of the student, as well as involving them in the process of learning. Every child is different and not all students relate to material in the same way. That is why I will have in mind two very important factors: Motivation and interest. With these in mind, I will have the attention of my students in order to have in them the desire to learn and later to succeed. I believe that my educational philosophy foundation will guide me to success in the classroom. This philosophy allows the student to interact with other children in the classroom and share ideas or interests, making the student able to communicate and express their thoughts. I think it is necessary to know the opinion of the student; that is why in the classroom I want to create an environment where they can feel comfortable to ask a question or give an opinion without letting behind the order and respect. I want to become a teacher because I know I have the patience to listen to them, and I consider myself capable to get along and interact with them. I strongly believe that children are very clever and I can learn a lot of them as I expect they learn from me. I want to be that teacher who kids remember when they grow up as the â€Å"best teacher† they had; I  want to make my kindergarten students enjoy their classroom instead of being afraid of it.   And the most important thing of all: I want to be a teacher because a teacher leaves a mark in somebody else’s life, and I want to be the first person leaving a mark in my students during their knowledge process in school.

Carl Jung: The Undiscovered Self Essay

?The book of C. G Jung â€Å"The Undiscovered Self† was written during the cold war concerning communism. He saw during this time the trend toward collectivism as the utmost threat to the individual self. He expresses grief over the adoption of mass mindedness, and encourages its psychic depreciation. Witnessing the physical and psychological destruction of war, Jung provides the reader his analytic interpretation of the incomparable loss of self in the intrusion of secular religion and social collectivism. Jung shows that although science tries to impose order on the world, the unique thing about real facts, conversely, is their individuality. However, the psyche remains irresolvable puzzle. An individual have to understand not the humanity as a whole but rather than the self. Whenever individual is pressured by a group an effect will occur just like part of the individual self will be deprived in order to fit-in to the benchmark of the group. The individual stops thinking of itself as a result the group becomes the personality of the individual. The dilemma of a human being in the world he lives is losing his self in the process of balancing the factors that can affect him as an individual. We have to get ourselves in order before we can get the rest of the world in order. Yes, man as a social being cannot continue life in the long run without the link to the community. But it doesn’t mean that the community will define us. We are necessitated to have always the sense of balance between the state, religions, and of course our individual psyche. Seeing in the model these three are demonstrated by the two forces, the conscious and unconscious. Later on this paper, it will be further discuss more. Going back, if we have a propensity to maintain the balance between the three, we can attain the self-knowledge that will characterize us, as a real individual. The model shows that there are factors that can affect one’s self knowledge. In the book, Jung tries to point out that the self-knowledge of a human being is a very limited knowledge since it only depends on the social factors that can affect it. There are many blind spots in self-knowledge, and these blind spots can have negative consequences for the self and for others. For example, one who overestimates the positivity of his or her personality or status is often disliked by others, whereas having insight into how others perceive the self and acknowledging one’s flaws seems to attenuate the negativity of others’ impressions. Poor self-knowledge is also associated with negative intrapersonal consequences, such as weak academic achievement and emotional problems. Likewise, lack of insight into how one will feel or behave in the future tends to result in poor decision making, disappointment with unpredicted outcomes, and ultimately lower life satisfaction. What we primarily know about our self is the conscious state. We are not acquainted that there is an inner state that is within us that can help to shape more our own self-knowledge. What I am talking about here is the unconscious psychic. We could have known that this unconscious psychic can outweigh the conscious psychic. In short, one cannot exist without the other. These two psychic forces should team up to promote a more apparent understanding of the self-knowledge. In reality there are conscious and unconscious agendas in the brain and both are important. It does not help to play the unconscious off against the conscious. In the brain at any time most of the agendas are unconscious, much of it is, however, consciousness-prone. The conscious and the unconscious always work together, not only in dreams but also in wakefulness. Our conscience for instance can admonish us out of the unconscious core from our memory, but by doing so it becomes conscious, and it is then the task of the reasoned will to draw the consequences out of it. The unconscious is not the â€Å"bad something† Freud had conceived, a something that plays tricks on us. It is rather the ground worker for consciousness, the staff that supports the leader. And the leader is: The conscious, reasoned free will. Why the unconscious is termed as the â€Å"evil† inside us? As a normal individual whenever we don’t like something about ourselves, or whenever we refuse to admit something about ourselves, we push those energies deep within the recesses of our psyche, creating cut off versions of who we really are. And to make matters even more difficult, we give those energies, bad names like â€Å"shadows† â€Å"demons† and â€Å"negative vibes. † As stated on the book, â€Å"Since it universally believed that man is merely what his consciousness knows of itself, he regards himself as harmless and so adds stupidity to iniquity. He does not deny that terrible things have happened and still go on happening, but it is always â€Å"the others† who do them. † Man has the fear of recognizing the shadow that is in the very first place was there. This fear of the unconscious psyche to be divulged slows down the understanding of self-knowledge. Since mentioned before, the conscious and unconscious must maintain equilibrium to achieve self-knowledge to the real extent. Human must not fear the shadow that dwells inside us. Where in reality, this shadow can help us to mold the individualism we want to resolve. If a general had no idea regarding what constitutes a favorable battle outcome, there would be no utility in simulating battle formations. Evaluating potential actions is challenging because it depends on taking diverse considerations into account (e. g. , physical or social consequences). Most knowledge regarding what is favorable is already embodied in the very agentic systems that, before the advent of suppression, controlled behavior directly. Unconscious conflict resolution processes thus furnish valuable information to conscious processes of planning for the future. Given sufficiently strong motivations and commitment to the planned course of action, specific plans such as â€Å"when X happens, I will do Y† themselves operate automatically when the future opportunity arises, as in the implementation intention research of Gollwitzer and colleagues (e. g. , Gollwitzer, 1999). In this way, unconscious processes not only adapt us to the present situation, but they also influence the tracks we lay to guide our future behavior. As mention earlier in this paper, the state and religion including the individual psyche should maintain a sense of stability in an individual. Man should not let neither the state nor religion, take away his individuality. One chapter of the book was entitled â€Å"Religion as the Counterbalance to Mass-mindedness†. Religion is defined as an, â€Å"organized belief system that includes shared and institutionalized moral values, beliefs about God, and involvement in religious community,† Individuals may be spiritual not religious, religious not spiritual, religious and spiritual, or neither spiritual nor religious. Often times the spiritual not religious individual is seeking meaning, connection with others, and completeness. The religious not spiritual person typically participates in religious institutions, holds theistic beliefs, and institutionalized moral values. The spiritual and religious person holds characteristics of both while the neither spiritual nor religious person holds few if any of these characteristics. In the book, Jung distinguishes between religion and creed, labeling religion as the relationship of an individual to God and a creed as a confession of faith in a collective belief. Creeds have codified their views, customs and beliefs and externalized themselves to such an extent that the external point of reference has become of minor importance. Jung tries to point out that, religion like the state yearn for the individual to sacrifice himself. The state and the religion have the same objective towards an individual but they have different line of attack to grasp it. Neither the state nor the religion is unscrupulous. In fact, we do need them, but they must be at the same rank in one’s self. One should not override the other, for it must be keep upright. Examine the spirits that speak in you.
